Cloud Farm is situated on the northern edge of the National Park pretty much in the centre; this gives you a good base to begin your exploration. The A39, running from the M5 at Bridgewater through to Minehead, Porlock, Lynton and on down the Atlantic Highway into Cornwall. It's most picturesque scenic views can be found when this road passes over the hills and valleys of Exmoor, not forgetting the notorious Porlock Hill, one of the steepest hills in the country. There is a toll road around for those faint of heart; this will give you views of the Harbour village of Porlock Weir. The road then descends into the village of Lynmouth, where it travels up through the magnificent Watersmeet valley. This piece of the A39 is such a good road to drive it was featured in the BBC's Top Gear program. The sunsets that can be seen in the evenings when you descend into Lynmouth are very spectacular. When touring on the high moor you will come across Exmoor ponies grazing off the heather and plenty of sheep. You may even be so lucky, especially at the top of Porlock hill, to see a herd of Red Deer, but they will be very tricky to spot being well camouflaged. While in Lynmouth it is well worth taking a trip up the cliff railway to Lynton. From Lynton you can travel out to the spectacular Valley of the Rocks. There are several little beaches to be found along the Exmoor coastline, most of them will sadly be lacking in sand but there are some hidden gems just waiting to be discovered like the beach at Lee Bay. For the surfers among you, Cloud Farm is a good overnight base for the sandy beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde.
